Development

Billboard is the world's most influential music media brand reaching key executives and tastemakers in and around the music business.

The problem

Billboard wanted to sell printed and digital copies of their weekly publications. They needed an intuitive, responsive, e-commerce site as well as a process in place to convert their print design files into interactive digital weeklies.

The solution

A one-stop shop where consumers can purchase Billboard's back issues, collector's editions, directories and branded merchandise. The e-commerce site is very intuitive and visitors can buy an edition with minimal amount of clicks.

For the digital publications I came up with a sereis of templates in Adobe DPS that allowed print articles to be converted into interactive features.

The process

I started my process by doing a requirement analysis which included the client's goals, target audience and details on the features they had in mind. I then proceeded to my design research by conducting a competitive analysis, parallel analysis of successful e-commerce sites as well as quantitative and qualitative research on tablet readership. The design concept phase for both projects ran in parallel.

For the website, I started by architecturing the sitemap and moved on to wireframes which were tested with the target audience and iterated based on patterns found in the testers feedback. Final designs were then concluded and packaged for development.

For the tablet templates I prototyped and tested different interactions with a series of articles. One of the insights that stood out during the discovery phase was the desire to include videos in the tablet version of the magazine. Short videos, specially on advertising, captured the testers' attention longer than more complex interactions. Based on the test results, I came up with several recommended interactions and templates, and how to implement them in a variety of articles.
